Footnotes

* Translated by Hildegarde Hunt Von Laue from the edition in the Inselbücherei, no. 200, prepared by F. Meinecke. From Theodore H. Von Laue, Leopold Ranke: The Formative Years (Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1950), pp.181–218. Reprinted by permission of Princeton University Press and the translator.

* The second volume of the Historisch-Politische Zeitschrift. (Asterisked notes are by the translator.)

* Ranke paraphrased rather than quoted literally a statement in Arthur Young’s Travels in France.

* Presumably Berkeley’s idealism and Hume’s skepticism.

* Notice here and in the subsequent analysis the features of Count Bernstorff’s foreign policy. Prussia was to make moral conquests in Germany, appearing as the true defender of German greatness and security in Europe, even in the eighteenth century. For that reason Ranke stressed the German mission of Frederick the Great, not altogether for the benefit of historical accuracy.

* He contemplated suicide.

* Here again Ranke read the policy of his masters at the Prussian Foreign Office into German history in the second half of the eighteenth century. He ignored the rivalry between Austria and Prussia and its disastrous consequences for Germany in the period of the French Revolution and Napoleonic wars.

* Ranke’s dating is incorrect. The famous session of the Grand’Chambre of the Parlement of Paris took place on August 7 1787. On August 15 the whole body found itself escorted to Troyes into banishment, by authority of lettres de cachet.

* The subsequent conclusion was omitted by Ranke in his edition of collected works.
